The Trembath
Memorial was originally dedicated to Jason Trembath. Jason was a Varsity
baseball player for the Horizon Hawks, with a bright future, until one
day in October of 1992 it was all taken away from him and his family.
Jason, 17 years old and his brother Michael, 15 years old, were playing
baseball in their backyard. When they went to retrieve an errand ball
an argument broke out between Jason and another 14 year old boy, Shawn
Driskell. It was after the argument that Driskell came back with a gun
from his house and shot Jason three times in the chest, killing Jason.
Michael was the only witness to the murder. Head coach, Duane Redford
along with all of Jason’s' teammates had to play their Spring season
without their starting shortstop, which was Jason’s' Senior season,
coach Redford retired Jason's number (#10) which can be found on all the
varsity jerseys. Tim and Mona Trembath set up a $1,000.00 scholarship
for the top senior baseball player along with buying each of the players'
varsity jerseys to keep; they continue to do this today.
As mentioned before, the Trembath Memorial was originally
in honor of Jason but the sad story continues. In the Spring of 1994,
Michael, a Junior Varsity baseball player for the Horizon Hawks, was going
to be testifying against Driskell for murdering his brother Jason. The
day before the trial, Michael went with some of Jason’s' friends
to get away for a while before he testified the next day. They went for
a drive through Clear Creek Canyon and on their way back home through
the canyon the car hit a patch of ice, the car lost control and rolled.
All three were ejected out of the car, both friends made it out alive
but Michael was killed. The Trembaths and the Horizon baseball program
had suffered another tragedy. Junior Varsity coach, Chris Wohlford, had
his team take the field in their next game and played without a second
baseman for the first inning, Michaels' position. Coach Redford retired
Michael’s number (#23) and it now can be found along side Jason's
on all the varsity jerseys. Mona remembered the day before the accident,
Michael telling her that he just wanted to be with his brother again.
Jason and Michael were Tim and Mona's only children.
Both brothers' numbers are now on the center field fence. Jason's #10
and Michael's #23 are constant reminders of the fond memories and good
times shared.
As some of you are aware, Tim and Mona have supported Horizon Baseball
by providing a $1,000.00 Trembath Memorial scholarship to the team's outstanding
senior. They have also supplied the team with jerseys for the past 14
years.
