World History/World Literature

 

Course Description

 

World Literature and World History is a year long, blocked course, which focuses on some of humanity’s most significant political, cultural, and intellectual achievements as expressed in the major civilizations of past and present. Students will develop skills in historical and literary inquiry, analysis, and interpretation, as well as make connections between genres of literature and historical events. The importance of geography and its relationship to the study of world history will be examined as well.


Some of the essential questions we will be examining include:


oWhat is a civilization?

oHow is literature timeless and how is it a product of its time?

oWhat is the reciprocal relationship between literature and history?  

oHow do we define the essentials of civilization based on its key parts?

oHow does the history of Western Civilization and Literature impact modern society?
