Offerings
The physical education curriculum is designed to provide
students with coeducational activities which emphasize the
development of skill proficiency in lifetime sports and offer
carry-over value for adult life. Selected curricular activities
engage the student in activities which encourage and emphasize the
development of desirable social attitudes and both mental and
physical fitness.
Anatomy and Physiology
10,11, 12
1 credit 1/2 credit P.E., 1/2 credit science
- Anatomy and Physiology is a course designed
for students interested in learning about their body's structure
and function through integrated hands on projects and activities.
Such activities will consist of lectures, group and individual
work, a complete dissection, lab projects, movement analysis,
fitness assessments, maintaining a notebook and writing research
papers. An emphasis is placed on topics related to health careers.
Writing skills, time management, note taking and various study
skills are integrated into the course as well. These skills are
designed to help students prepare for post high experiences. This
course is recommended for students interested in pursuing careers
in medical, health or sports medicine related fields.
- A $12.00 lab fee is required for this

Contemporary Health Issues

- This integrated program develops a sound
foundation for a healthy way of life students learn about
themselves, their personalities, attitudes and how this will
affect their decision making and their futures. Students will deal
with the issues of : Human sexuality, drugs and alcohol, suicide,
interpersonal relationships, family relations, and conflict
resolution. Living patterns will be discussed with the focus on
nutrition, wellness, and exercise. this course may be taken for r
either 1/2 Fine Arts credit or 1/2 Physical Education
credit.
- Note: This class may be taken by an 11th or
12th grader to fulfill the health requirement if the student has
not taken Healthy Choices as a 9th or 10th grader.
Healthy Choices
(required for 9th or 10th graders)
- 9, 10 1/2 credit
- This course is for teenagers who need to make
the most of their high school years. It give students the chance
to look at their own lifestyles in terms of dealing with conflict
resolutions, successful sexuality, peer pressure, decision making,
and destructive behaviors and addictions. Class issues will also
include reaching independence and taking charge of one's own
life.
Introduction to Fitness or Team Fitness may use
to satisfy the fitness requirement.
Introduction to Fitness
9,10,11,12
- 1/2 credit
- This course is an entry level course which
provides the student with a basic knowledge of weight lifting and
cardiovascular training . Each student will be given introductory
information in the areas of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning.
Elementary lifts, proper spotting techniques, target heart rate,
introduction to steroids, and basic nutrition will be taught. This
course cannot be repeated for elective credit.
Team Fitness
9, 10, 11, 12
- 1/2 credit
- This course is an entry level course which
provides the student with a basic knowledge of cardiovascular
training. Each student will be given introductory information in
the areas of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, target heart
rate, hazards of steroid use, and basic nutrition. This course
also focuses on the development of skills necessary for successful
and enjoyable participation in activities that may include floor
hockey, indoor/outdoor soccer, speedball, team handball, ultimate
Frisbee and other various cardiovascular team activities Rules,
strategy, safety, game etiquette and related terminology are
introduced and applied to game situations. This course cannot be
repeated for elective credit.
Leisure Sports
9, 10, 11, 12
- 1/2 credit
- This course focuses on the development of
skills necessary for successful and enjoyable participation in
bowling and billiards. The primary objective is to develop
interest in continued and more advanced participation with these
lifetime skill activities. There is a $75.00 fee for
transportation and facility rentals.
Positive P.E. Aide
9, 10, 11, 12
- 1/2 credit
- This course is offered to students who have an
interest working with physically and mentally challenged students
with in a physical education environment. Each peer coach will
work on a one to one basis with his or her "exceptional" peer
under the supervision of a physical education instructor. Student
aides are screened and selected based on recommendations and
personal interviews. Aides are then required to assist and
participate in all activities (running, weight lifting, locker
room assistance, test taking etc.) with a specially challenged
student. This class may be repeated for elective credit
only.

Racket Sports
9, 10, 11, 12
- 1/2 credit
- This course focuses on the development of
skills necessary for successful and enjoyable participation in the
activities of badminton, pickle ball, and tennis. This primary
objective is to develop interest in continued and more advanced
participation in the games. Instruction includes origin,
development, and proper techniques in each activity, as well as
proper care and appropriate selection of equipment. Rules,
strategy, safety, game courtesies, and related terminology are
introduced and applied to game situations.
Recreational Sports
9,10,11,12
- 1/2 credit
- This course focuses on the development of
skills necessary for successful participation in archery, golf,
shuffleboard, table tennis, and other lifetime activities. The
primary objective is to develop interest in continued and more
advanced participation in the activities. There is a $20.00 fee
for this class
Strength and Conditioning
10,11,12
1/2 credit
This course is for students who have an interest
in activities which are stimulating for the heart and lungs or used
for the purpose of muscle development. This course includes an
emphasis on cardiovascular strengths and endurance and instruction in
fundamentals of weightlifting. Nutrition and ergogenic aids
instruction included. This class may be repeated for elective
credit.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of the
required Introduction to Fitness course.
Weight Lifting I
10,11,12
1/2 credit
This course is for the student who has a strong
interest in body toning, muscle mass development, introduction to
power lifting and body building. This course includes an emphasis on
nutrition, proper spotting, introduction to basic anatomy,
computerized exercise prescriptions with an introduction to a general
periodization model. An understanding of specific exercises work
which body part will be emphasized.
PERQUISITE: Successful
completion of the required Introduction to Fitness or Team fitness
class.
Weight Lifting II
10,11,12
1/2 credit
This course is for students who have an strong
interest in activities that will develop skills in power lifting,
Olympic style lifting, body building and various anaerobic
conditioning. The course also includes instruction in the areas of
introductory anatomy, physiology, basic nutrition, periodization,
general adaptation syndrome, and ergogenic aids.
PERQUISITE: Successful
completion of the weight lifting one course.
NOTE: Students may take only two of the following
three courses. The first may be taken for P.E. credit and the second
may be taken for elective credit only.
Volleyball / Softball
10,11,12
1/2 credit
This course involves units in volleyball and
softball focusing on the techniques and fundamentals. The origin,
development, and nature of the activities are studied, Related safety
practices and playing courtesies are observed. Rules and terminology
are discussed and applied to basic playing strategy. The volleyball
skills and students will learn to referee and score. The softball
unit will include basic and intermediate skills of playing the game.
Students will learn scoring and will be able to umpire and score a
game.
Basketball / Volleyball
10,11,12
1/2 credit
this course involves unites in volleyball and
basketball focussing on the techniques and fundamentals. The origin,
development, and nature of the activities are studied, Related safety
practices and playing courtesies are observed. Rules and terminology
are discussed and applied to basic strategy. The volleyball unit
includes beginner and intermediate power volleyball skills and
students will learn referee and scorings. The basketball unit will
include basic and intermediate skills of playing the game. Students
will be able to referee a game situation.
Softball / Basketball
