A New Era: Horizon Orchestras on the Rise

A New Era: Horizon Orchestras on the Rise

Over the past four years, the Horizon High School Orchestra Program has experienced an inspiring transformation under the direction of Mr. Duran. Once two small ensembles with limited reach, the program has evolved into a thriving community of student musicians, known not only for its rapid growth but for its rising standard of musical excellence.

A large orchestra is performing on a stage, with colorful lighting and a backdrop visible in the background. The orchestra members are seated and playing their instruments, creating a lively and vibrant performance.

This year, Horizon has proudly expanded to three full orchestras, a testament to the growing interest in the program and the vibrant culture of musicianship that Mr. Duran has cultivated. Students now have the opportunity to grow at every level, from entry level high school to advanced chamber orchestra, fostering a space where dedication, creativity, and collaboration flourish.

For the past two consecutive years, the Horizon Orchestras have earned invitations to perform at the Colorado ASTA (American String Teachers Association) State Orchestra Festival, a prestigious opportunity and a first in the school’s history. These performances have showcased not only the technical skill of the students but their depth of musical expression and passion. Both orchestras have also performed at the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) Music Festival and have received Superior and Excellent ratings.

In 2023, the program reached another milestone by traveling to California, where students had a once-in-a-lifetime experience of participating in a professional recording workshop session with Disney artists. This immersive opportunity offered insight into the music industry and left a lasting impression on students, many of whom now aspire to have careers in performance, production, and music education. Looking ahead, the orchestras will be hitting the road again in 2026, this time heading to Orlando, Florida, to participate again in a Studio Soundtrack Session at Disney World.

Alongside their competitive and travel accomplishments, Horizon’s orchestras have made their mark through dynamic and innovative performances. From the theatrical Symphony of Shadows Halloween concert to powerful full symphony and choir collaborations at winter concerts, the program continues to push artistic boundaries. Annual combined concerts with feeder middle schools foster mentorship and community. The Harmony Club, an after-school program led by HHS students, provides music mentorship and support to middle schoolers, nurturing the next generation of musicians in a fun, inclusive setting.

Mr. Duran’s leadership has brought vision, structure, and heart to the program. Through challenging repertoire, real-world musical opportunities, and a focus on community and student growth, the Horizon Orchestra Program has become a shining example of what is possible when young musicians are empowered and inspired.

Backed by passion, purpose, and people who believe in the power of music, Horizon’s Orchestras are playing louder, prouder, and stronger than ever! From the rehearsal room to the national stage, Horizon is proving that the future of orchestral music is here, and it’s powerful.
